Evaluation Question 1

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

  • I have used continuity throughout my magazine by creating a house style. I have used the same colours throughout and also the same background. I have used the same font for features and also for the double page spread article. My page numbers shown on my front cover to advertise the content of the magazine match those on my contents page, this creates continuity as the front page matches the contents and therefore matches my double page spread also.  I researched examples of other magazines which shared my genre such as Kerrang, to establish the connotations of my house style. Red connotes danger and passion, the rock genre is generally associated with danger and a daring lifestyle and I find that rock fans are generically quite passionate about the music that they listen to. Black connotes darkness and death which re-enforces the name of my magazine which is ‘Undead’ the stereotypical audience of my magazine would be the emo/goth stereotype who are also known to wear black clothing which again entices them to the magazine along with their passion for the genre of music itself. My magazine develops forms and conventions of other magazines such as Kerrang and NME by creating a similar plug and also by including sell lines including artists that would be featured in these magazines. I also placed my model centrally on the cover because this supports the conventions of Kerrang magazine and also creates a large dominant connotation of the main artist(s). I included some teasing contents as well to relate my magazine again to Kerrang. I used similar language techniques used to anchor articles such as ‘Arctic Monkeys Come-back Tour bigger than ever before!’ I included a footer which includes teasing contents about the contents of the magazine, including ‘Hollywood Undead’, ‘Fall Out Boy’, ‘Blink 182’ and ‘Imagine Dragons’. I have used a large, dominant title to establish the name of my magazine in a dominant, eye-catching way. This emphasises the magazine and I also included a slogan ‘The music you live for” because I think this juxtaposes the title which is ‘Undead’. I have also included a discount to Blue Banana which is an emo/gothic shop which supports the target audience.
With regards to conventions of Kerrang magazine I feel that I have conformed, especially in terms of house style, the colours that have connotations of danger and rock music in general are features that I have adhered to. The headline is on an angle like the one I chose to use, however I feel that I should have made the font more to the style of Kerrang or NME because I think that the one I have used does not particularly adhere to the genre, or representations of Rock music. I have also used a footer to include more band names like this particular issue of Kerrang, I think that I should have used more than one colour in the footer to draw more attention to it, however I feel that it is still an effective feature that tells the audience what is included in the magazine and also relates to the genre because I have included many popular band names.

Evaluation Question 2

How does your media product represent particular social groups?

Stereotypes play a key role in how my magazine will represent particular social groups. For example; usually emos and goths read about artists and bands that I have featured in my magazine but due to recent changes in society indie lovers may enjoy my magazine also.
This therefore means that more people will enjoy my magazine now than there would've been twenty years ago. This is an example of how the media is constantly changing due to changes in society and how people have changed the way in which their stereotypes relate to their music/media choices and decisions.
I would not like to limit my magazine to a specific social group/stereotype because I think that whilst the media is constantly changing, people are also changing and generally people have a more eclectic taste in music, than just sticking to one genre constantly. I feel that this would have an impact on my magazine because anyone could be the audience and enjoy my product. I also feel that even those who are not in the specific target audience age group could enjoy my product due to this shift in music taste, which widens my audience even further.

Evaluation Question 5

How did you attract/address your audience?

Having conducted my planning and research in accordance with the reader profile I felt confident in making my magazine product appealing to my target audience.

Having adapted my work in accordance with the reader profiles I believe that my product would be attractive to my audience. I undertand that not a wide majority of my audience enjoy exactly the same music, bands or artists which is why I have incorporated a range of different features in order to entice them all, I feel that I needed to conduct more audience research than what I had done, because this would've allowed me to understand more about my target audience and I would have been able to feature different aspects of this research onto my magazine.

Evaluation Question 7

Progression - College magazine to Music magazine

It is clear that throughout the course I have made some progression, with Photoshop and with the general styling of each magazine. I have learnt a lot about the conventions of already established magazines and applied them to my music magazine as the year has progressed.
I also feel that my music magazine looks a lot more professional than my college one. Mainly because it is more neatly set out and the house style is more suited to the genre, whereas my college magazine is a bit 'all over the place' and there is no established house style. I have developed both my knowledge and creativity throughout the course as shows above in the comparison.
My main help through the creation of my music magazine was looking at established magazines and even just on Google images to compare mine and other magazines and find things that I could improve on. I think the induction assignment was very helpful and is still helpful when putting together this evaluation because I can compare and contrast against my initial knowledge and creativity, and the effort I put into my final draft of my music magazine.

I particularly use the 'quick selection' tool in order to ensure that I have got a picture with no background in order to create a sense of a professional product that would appeal to the correct target audience as the existing products that I researched in order to plan the process of the creation of my product. The house style has improved from the preliminary task to the music magazine and I feel that these are conventions that I have built upon myself as a result of research, planning and creating my own product. I began the course with limited knowledge in regards to Photoshop, Blogger and even the cameras we were given, which I felt put me at an advantage because when it came to the creation of my product I was able to develop my understanding and knowledge on this software and I would have a lot to include in my evaluation about the process I had to follow in order to create my product.
I managed to angle the photo in a more effective way on my music magazine because of the camera use for my college magazine, this therefore makes my product look more professional and conforms with existing products. Completing the preliminary task also allowed me to have some experience of research and planning which helped me to further develop ideas for my music magazine.
